YEREVAN, JULY 8, ARMENPRESS. Political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan says after the April four-day war the international community is taking steps aimed at easing the tension in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone, restoring the process of the peaceful settlement of the conflict within the framework of the Minsk Group co-chairmanship.
“Now the Minsk process is restored. The Minsk Group Co-Chairs are trying to contribute to the establishment and strengthening of security in the conflict zone, to reduce the violence and new risks of it. That’s why, it is necessary to reaffirm the functions of the Minsk Group, to reaffirm that this format continues working. This was done by the statement issued by the CSTO Foreign Ministers”, “Armenpress” reports, he said referring to the statement on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement adopted in the CSTO FM’s Council session.
Alexander Iskandaryan stated that Russia has played a huge role in the adoption of that statement, rather than Kazakhstan, Belarus or Kyrgyzstan, since Russia is one of the major participants in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process.
“Such statements are adopted only because the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement has no importance for Kazakhstan, Belarus or Kyrgyzstan. But I don’t think that this statement can change the situation since the tools of the political influence on Azerbaijan are not enough. I would be happy if I was wrong, however, this is the situation”, he said.
A joint statement on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement has been adopted based on the results of the CSTO FM’s Council session in Yerevan. In the statement the sides reaffirmed that the NKR people’s right to self-determination has no alternative, the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship format dealing with the peaceful settlement of the conflict remains unchanged, as well as they reaffirmed the necessity of the implementation of agreements reached in the Vienna and St. Petersburg meetings between the Presidents.
