Samvel Martirosyan advises not to make use of social networks for confidential talks

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. There are no facts proving that the National Security Service (NSS) of the Republic of Armenia has any control over correspondence in social networks. Media expert Samvel Martirosyan told the journalists about this, referring to the rumors that the NSS Armenia has access to social network correspondences. “Of course, we must always keep in mind that it is possible. But there is no fact proving it for now. Look, for example, we know about wiretapping of telephone conversations but there are no facts proving that social network correspondences are being intercepted”, “Armenpress” reports the expert saying.

In his words, it is very important to evaluate the risks. “For example, many communication means are watched by American and British agencies, about which we learned from Edward Snowden’s revelations. Russian communication means are most probably watched by Russian secret services, as they have a special law allowing agencies to watch social networks. That is why, if there is a necessity of confidential interaction, you should not make use of social networks”, Samvel Martirosyan stated.

He added that there are special programs for confidential interactions. “For example there is the “Signal” program for cell phones. There is no proved fact up till now that it is being watched by anyone. For example, the same Snowden used that program”, the expert said.

In the words of Samvel Martirosyan, Facebook has never been and will never be a reliable and protected platform for interaction. “Your messages are kept not only in your computer, but also in Facebook’s servers. Even if no one watches your correspondences, there is little, but still some odds that the servers may be broken and your correspondences will appear in the hands of a third person. There have been such cases, and that is why you should use such communications means, where the messages remain at two people and cannot appear in the hands of a third person”, the expert explained.
