YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS. In case of possible war for Karabakh Russia will have to choose between Armenia and Azerbaijan which is out of its interests. Political scientist Sergey Minasyan mentioned about this in an interview with journalists, adding that Russia must choose between its only ally and CSTO member, Armenia, and Azerbaijan with its economic and geopolitical importance. “In any case, irrespective of what decision Russia will make, it will lose either Armenia or Azerbaijan, or, what is most possible, will lose both of them”, the political scientist mentioned, adding that Russia backs preservation of status-qua in Karabakh.
“In case of preservation of status-qua Armenia will need Russia’s military-technical support and Azerbaijan attempts to become Russia’s main military-technical partner which is fully within the interests of Russia as it makes it possible for Russia to preserve influence on both sides”, “Armenpress” reports, Minasyan said.
The political scientist spoke about Russia’s rendering initiative during tensions, mentioning, “Russia really has an important role in the security sector as it is directly present in the region and is the only one that can engage in case of any developments, including military. In that regard Russia definitely has special role in the region as well as within the framework of the Minsk Group”.
