GAVAR, JULY 9, ARMENPRESS. A big encrusted khachkar stands out in Vanevan village of Gegharkunik Province, near the home of the head of the local community. The khachkar has attracted the attention of not only locals but also of Armenians from the Diaspora and Armenian and foreign archaeologists. The lithographic khachkar stands out both for its eloquent look and for an interesting story.
As Armenpress was informed by Vanevan’s Mayor Norayr Harutyunyan, the khachkar was left in a pit 50 meters away from its current location by the Muslims. It was unearthed in 1989, after Kolya Baghiryan’s daughter saw a strange dream. Kolya Baghiryan’s family was deported from Baku. His daughter saw the khachkar and its location in her dream and demanded to do digging in the spot and after the digging works were completed the gorgeous khachkar was found there. It turned out that the khachkar dates back to 12th century.
