Germany's FM doesn't mind describing 1915 events as "genocide"

BERLIN, 20 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank- Walter Steinmeier is supporting the deputies who are in favor of calling the Armenian massacres “genocide”. In an interview withSüddeutscheZeitung,Steinmeier said what happened in 1915 “could be generalized within the concept of genocide”.

“Violence, fear and horror, which are mentioned in our resolution, can be described with one word-genocide. I have a good understanding of the grounds and, first and foremost, the sentimentality for that demand,”he said. Steinmeier has given more leeway to the debates and criticism of the deputies, according to which this must be viewed as genocide.

Steinmeier also emphasized that he can’t overlook what might happen after April 24th. The newspaper mentioned that, according to its sources, the final discussions on the issue must be held with President Gauck.
