400 convicts to be moved to newly-opened Armavir penitentiary

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. 400 convicts from the overcrowded prisons of the Republic of Armenia will be moved to the newly-opened Armavir correctional facility. As reports “Armenpress”, the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Hovhannes Manukyan stated this in a conversation with the journalists held at the opening of the first building of the correctional facility.

The official opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Hovhannes Manukyan, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia John Heffern and a number of other high ranking officials.

About 1,200 convicts serving time in closed and semi-closed correctional facilities are expected to continue their sentence at the Armavir penitentiary.

The penitentiary’s staff now includes 201 employees. The project was initiated as part of judiciary reforms.
