Launch of probation service will essentially change the punishment policy in Armenia

YEREVAN, APRIL 10, ARMENPRESS. By the program of judicial and legislative amendments Armenia has confirmed its readiness to launch the probation service. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Aram Orbelyan at the conference on punishments and probation not connected with imprisonment. “This program was launched with the financial aid of the Government of Norway, the aim of which is to reveal the possibilities of implementing the probation service”, - reports Armenpress, quoting Orbelyan.

Orbelyan highlighted, that the implementation of the probation service has the purpose of providing the efficiency of the applied punishments. “If in the past we believed that the best punishment was to deprive a person of freedom, now we have changed our minds and we wish to work out new mechanisms of the application of punishments, which is the aim of this program” – said Orbelyan, underlining, that for the implementation of the probation service Armenia cooperates with EU and USA in order to understand their experience in that sphere and for its future application in Armenia.
