Almelo city of Netherlands to open memorial devoted to victims of Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, APRIL 2, ARMENPRESS: Almelo city of the Netherlands on April 24 will open a memorial devoted to the victims of the Armenian Genocide which is the first one outside the borders of Armenia built by the scheme of the Armenian churches. The author-initiator of the constructed memorial built on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Christian Gueliji noted in a conversation with the journalists that he fulfilled his father’s wish and constructed a memorial which will tell about the Armenian Genocide not only to the Armenians but also the foreigners.”The memorial is devoted not only to the memory of our 1.5 million victims, but is meant to remind the people living around the world that similar cases should not be repeated again and there should be peace through the whole world among all nations and religions,” Christian Gueliji said as reported by Armenpress.

According to him, the memorial which was built in the area of the Armenian church in Almelo city has the scheme of the Armenian churches-it is built on 16 pillars, with the Armenian tufa, with 16 khachkars.

The leader of the Armenian Diocese of Ukraine Grigoris Archbishop Buniatian assures that the memorial will burn not only the Armenians of Almelo, but also the Armenians of the whole Europe with patriotic spirit. “I know the Armenian community of Almelo which has long been exerting great effort and wished to have an Armenian Church. And today we have it. I have chanted a liturgy in that church for several times and have seen the Armenians’ ardor. I believe that the memorial built in the same area of that church will help both the Armenian youth and generations of Almelo and other European colonies to learn more about the genocide,” Grigoris Archbishop Buniatyan said.
