YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 4, ARMENPRESS: The Swedish Armenian community expects that the parliamentary elections in Sweden in September 2014 may bring to change of power, which could be beneficial for the Armenians. “In September the parliamentary elections will be held in Sweden, in the result of which the Social-Democrats may come to power, who have much expressed pro-Armenian position. Besides, they have recognized the Armenian Genocide in their party’s congress and intend to make it a part of the government’s agenda”, - told the President of the Assembly of Armenians of Europe Garo Hakopian to Armenpress. According to him, it is important to carry out works through the Swedish government and the parliament to spread the Armenian Genocide issue in the other countries of the European Union.
To the question – what successes does the Armenian community of Sweden have in awareness of the Armenian Genocide – Garo Hakopian answered that there are also positive results in the background of the spread pro-Turkish moods in the country. “During the last 10-15 years works have been actively carried out in Sweden to spread awareness about the Armenian Genocide, which is the result of the joint efforts made by the national, cultural and public organizations. There is no Swedish, who does not know about the Armenian Genocide”, - said the President of the Assembly of Armenians of Europe Garo Hakopian.
The fact of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman government has been documented, recognized, and affirmed in the form of media and eyewitness reports, laws, resolutions, and statements by many states and international organizations. The complete catalogue of all documents categorizing the 1915 wholesale massacre of the Armenian population in Ottoman Empire as a premeditated and thoroughly executed act of genocide, is extensive. Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965. The massacres of the Armenian people were officially condemned and recognized as genocide in accordance with the international law by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Canada, Vatican and Australia.
