Istanbul-Armenians visit their ancestors’ village in Sasun

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 21, ARMENPRESS. The Agopian family living in Istanbul paid a visit to their ancestors’ homeland and lighted candles in Sasun. As reports “Armenpress” Turkish Haberler.com stated this.

The Agopians paid a visit to the Sasun Province and were hosted in their forefathers’ village. Here Aiche Agopian preyed for peace in the world along with his family members. The Agopians underscored that Sasun is a wonderful place both in the respect of nature and lifestyle. “I was born in Istanbul, but I always know that I am from Sasun,” Agopian noted.

Sasun, also known as Sanasun, is one of the cantons of the Aghdznik province of Greater Armenia (present-day Turkey). Etymologically, Sasun (Sanassun) derived from Sanassar (name of one of the sons of the Assyrian King Senekerim who, according to Bible, flew to Armenia escaping the King Nebuchaddnezzar). The canton was situated on the wooded slopes of the Armenian Taurus. In different periods of the Armenian history, the Armenians of Sassun served as example of courage and stoic resistance to the enemy. Such reputation was reflected in the David of Sassun, a medieval Armenian epic poem.
