YEREVAN, JULY 30, ARMENPRESS: The process of withdrawal of the Russian servicemen and the Russian movable property from Gabala radar station has already been completed. As reported by Armenpress, quoting the Azerbaijani APA Agency, Azerbaijan and Russia will sign an agreement on the handover of Gabala radar station in the near future.
All movable property of the military facility has been sent to Russia by railway. Russian troops leaving the country were accompanied by servicemen of the Internal Troops till the state border.
High-ranking delegation of Russia will visit Azerbaijan in the middle of August to sign an agreement on the handover.
Currently, the station is controlled by the Azerbaijani servicemen.
Azerbaijan set up commission to determine the property of Gabala radar station in November 2012. Russia suspended the station’s exploitation in December 2012, because Azerbaijan increased the lease payment. Azerbaijan demanded $300 million lease payment from Russia for the station.
The agreement on “The status, principles and terms of Gabala RLS between the Azerbaijani Government and Russian Government” was signed in 2002. Russia suspended the station’s exploitation on December 10, 2012. Gabala RLS, established in 1984 as a missile defense system of the USSR, possesses the ability to take launch of ballistic missiles over the Indian Ocean - 6000 km radius under its control. Azerbaijan received USD 7 million tenancy payment from Russia for the exploitation of this station.
