YEREVAN, OCTOBER 31, ARMENPRESS: Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan visited “Shengavit” and “Erebuni” historical and archeological museum-reserves excavated in the place of historical capital Artashat on October 31. These two museums are the masterpieces of Armenian archaeological heritage.
As Armenpress was informed form the presidential press office, the head of the country get acquainted with the results of the excavation, as well as with conditions and issues of the archaeological places.
According to archaeologist the excavations of Artashat historical capital which was founded by King Artashes I in 176 B.C. and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia from 185 BC until 120 AD, will give an opportunity to restore the image of one of the cultural and economic centers of Ancient East.
Shengavit area was first excavated in a trial trench by Bayburtian in 1938. S.A. Sardarian took over excavations in 1958, but left little provenience information to indicate where his finds came from. Simonyan re-opened excavations in 2000 at a very small scale and quickly realized its continuing potential. The most important levels are the top two representing Early Bronze 1 and 2 or Kura Araks I and II in Badalyan and Smith's chronology, or Early Bronze 1 and 2 and Kura-Araks II and III in Sagona's chronology.
Serzh Sargsyan visited the exhibition of “Erebuni” museum and afterwards watched the temporary exhibition titled “Way. Erebuni yesterday and today”.
After his visit to the museums President had a meeting with the Minister of Culture and experts of archeological sphere.
It was highlighted during the meeting that the results of archaeological research and excavation can be considered as a firm and unquestionable basis for the political sphere.
