The daily Azg writes that one of the most discussed topics in Armenia's political field yesterday was Medvedev-Obama-Sarkozy statement on the Karabakh conflict settlement. The paper says particularly "the time has come for making a step toward peaceful settlement", "prepare publics for peace and not war", "end the work on the principles of the Karabakh settlement in June" were the most widely discussed phrases.
The paper says in general the statement was positively assessed by many, though it was noted that it contained no new revelations, except the moment where it is noted about the existence of the final variant of basic principles and that after L'Aquila and Muskoka new moments have appeared. The rest is being considered a message to non-constructive Azerbaijan, the paper said.
The daily Aravot writes that the opposition believes that its three key demands have been met, and now it is going to fight for one thing only: an early presidential election, the paper's editorial says. "But I don't like the idea, to tell the truth," the editor of the daily says. "First, the opposition's argument that extraordinary elections would be conducted in a fairer manner than the regular ones doesn't sound convincing to me. The most unfair election in the past 20 years was the 1998 presidential election when the regime, as well as the Armenian Pan-national Movement nomenclature, did their best not to allow Karen Demirchyan, who enjoyed the support of the absolute majority of the voters, to become the president. Also, it is unclear why the presidential election is preferred to the parliamentary election: under the current constitution a president not enjoying the support of the parliament majority has only limited powers. So it is more important to hold an early parliamentary election rather than presidential. Finally, if the goal is to have a smooth change of power, then early elections do not guarantee smoothness", the editor of the daily writes.
