Swedish Professor says many states prefer economic ties with Turkey to condemnation of the Genocide

YEREVAN, APRIL 20, ARMENPRESS: Turkey, like many other states, is trying to touch upon the Armenian Genocide issue only within the framework of historians, Swedish historian, professor of Uppsala University Goran Gunner said at the “Armenian Genocide and the Scandinavian Response” conference today.

“The Turkey’s experience to discuss the Armenian Genocide issue only with historians is possible to understand. With it they are trying to keep clean their face in front of the international community. But committing genocide is not the case not to come into terms with and not to condemn”, he said. “Such crimes must first be condemned and then studied by historians”, Gunner noted.

In response to the question whether the European Union will tolerate the membership of country accused in such grave crime, Goran Gunner said this step will be against the norms adopted by the European Union. “Europe is not united in this issue: a number of states exclude the entrance of Turkey, the others encourage it. The issue is political one and many states, who have deep economic relations with Turkey close their eyes on the accusation on crime against humanity”, the Uppsala University professor said.
