UNODC Office to be established in Armenia

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS: The violations connected with drug-addiction are continuously growing in the republic. Currently there are 164 oncological patients and 112 drug-addicts getting methadone treatment. Different events are being carried out in the republic for fighting against drug-addiction.

This year United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is planned to be established in Armenia. The head of the UNODC will arrive here to discuss with the country’s officials the possibilities of implementation of new programs with the Office.

Official from the RA Police said during 2010 as a result of operative-investigative events 1524 cases of illegal drug circulation were revealed which is 23.1% more as compared with the 2009. During the past year 854 people dealing with illegal drug circulation were subjected to responsibility. Twenty-one of them were women, 2 teenagers, 58 citizens of other countries.

UNODC with the support of the OSCE Yerevan Office and Norwegian government established a computer classroom at the police academy equipped with 25 computers containing topics on illegal drug trafficking and necessary software.

RA Education and Science Ministry has worked out a program on the basis of which 8-9th graders of secondary schools are having “Healthy Lifestyle” classes.
