Number of deaths from AIDS decreasing year by year

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 22, ARMENPRESS: The third conference of the monitoring of AIDS pandemic in CIS states kicked off today. It is dedicated to the theme of “Second Generation Functional System of Monitoring: New opportunities and Challenges”. The conference is implemented by Armenia office of the joint UN program on HIV/AIDS.

Armenian Deputy Minister of Healthcare Sergey Khachatryan noted in his speech that the issues on AIDS are in the focus of attention of the Armenian Healthcare Ministry.

The 2010 global report on HIV/AIDS notes that the epidemic of AIDS is changing its way, the quantity of new contagious persons and new cases of death have decreased.

According to the participants of the conference, there is already 37% efficiency in 37 countries of the world, the percentage of spread of the infection has deceased in 15 countries, but there are still numerous people who have a wish of treatment.

The number of the contagious persons has been tripled in the Central Asia and Eastern Europe reaching 1.4 million in 2009. In two countries of the region – in Russia and Ukraine, the spread of HIV makes 1% or more making the 90% of the new contagious persons. In 7 countries of the world, including in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the growth of HIV infection has made over 25%. From 2005 there is a growth of decease. The regional differences are sharp in regard to statistics. The situation in former USSR and Baltic countries is more serious.

According to Lev Zohrabyan, UN AIDS Regional Adviser, the number of deaths from AIDS is decreasing year by year, but the position in our region is other. Here the treatment of pregnant women from infections comprises a large number. Nevertheless, Mr. Zohrabyan said that there are also considerable successes, and despite that, we must not weaken as there is a huge work to implement.

Speeches, serious discussions over technical issues, experience exchange are intended during the 3 days of the conference, the participants together with their Armenian partners will discuss the issues and flaws concerning introduction of trustworthy systems of HIV/AIDS study into the region, the efficient ways of fighting against AIDS epidemic.
