YEREVAN, JANUARY 18, ARMENPRESS: The most important in the joint declaration adopted by the Presidents of Armenia and Cyprus is the provision according to which the right to self-determination must have an obligatory force in the NK conflict settlement process, director of the Oriental Studies Institute Ruben Safrastyan said, adding that the text of the Declaration and the speech of the RA President in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus testifies the existence of high level relations between the two countries which is especially being highlighted taking into consideration that Cyprus is the EU member-state.
“For the first time declaration on such level is being adopted relating to the NK settlement issue and pointing out that right of self-determination is obligatory,” Safrastyan said.
According to him, our diplomacy must hence work in that direction: it is necessary to seek the formulations about the right of people to self-determination find place in other documents. “The right to self-determination is not only equal to the principle of territorial integrity but is more prior,” Safrastyan said. He also noted that though the Cypriot issue from the point of view of state policy of Cyprus must be solved on the basis of territorial integrity, the president of the Cyprus said in the NK issue the important thing is the self-determination of people.
“Every conflict has its logical solution based both on the historic and contemporary political conditions,” he pointed out.
