YEREVAN, JANUARY 17, ARMENPRESS: Azerbaijan must be subjected to responsibility for pogroms of Armenians in Baku, director of the Armenian Genocide museum-institute Hayk Demoyan said today speaking to Armenpress and noting that the Armenian pogroms of 1980s in Baku and Sumgait are directly connected with the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
“The contribution of the Armenians to the reinforcement of Baku as a city is inviolable. It is impossible to consider Baku as an Azerbaijani city: it is a remote city of the Russian Empire where the Armenians had their notable impact,” Demoyan pointed out. According to him, in our days the traces of Armenian presence are being eliminated. “Like the Armenian element was eliminated now they are trying to eliminate the presence of Armenian culture in that territory,” Demoyan pointed out.
He said the Armenian pogroms in Baku had three phases – 1905, 1918 and 1989-1990. “The 1918 pogroms of Armenians may be considered the continuation of 1915 Armenian Genocide,” Demoyan said, pointing out that neither of these three phases received corresponding political assessment.
