YEREVAN, JANUARY 13, ARMENPRESS: As a result of referendum on self-determination in the South Sudan, independence of another state will be declared, political analyst Alexander Markarov said at a meeting with reporters, adding that the independence of South Sudan may bring to interesting developments in Africa.

Speaking about the impact of the referendum on the NK issue, the political analyst said that this self-determination referendum is not so important for us as the Nagorno Karabakh used its right to self-determination 19 years ago.

On the other hand according to the political analyst the conduction of the self-determination referendum in the South Sudan is interesting in respect of appearance of new elements in the international policy as a mechanism of becoming independent starts coming forth actively. “Referendums are being involved in the international policy becoming a way of realization of right to self-determination,” Markarov pointed out.

Referring to the other cases of self-determination like Kosovo, South Ossetia and Abkhazia and Nagorno Karabakh, the political analyst said that the cases of realization of the right of self-determination in these countries have similarities and differences. In Nagorno Karabakh Markarov said the referendum was conducted in 1990-1991 on the basis of existing legal norms.

“With the South Sudan referendum we acquire another powerful document,” he noted, adding that this year the negotiations over the NK conflict settlement will continue. At the same time Markarov reminded that Armenia is the guarantor of the NK self-determination right.

The political analyst also noted that with this referendum the North Sudan won only stability. For making such step it is necessary to have political will which was displayed by the leadership of the North Sudan with which it differs from the Azerbaijani authorities.
