YEREVAN, JANUARY 11, ARMENPRESS: The oldest winery of the world was discovered in Armenia. In the caves of Areni, province of Vayots Dzor, an international expedition group discovered a grape squeezing vessel, pickling jugs and wine glasses, which date back to 4000 B.C.
The information on the findings was provided by the National Geographic Society. The discovery implies that viticulture arose in the Armenian Highland. The findings are the oldest examples of winery.
The oldest examples of winery were considered to be the 5100-year-old findings of the tomb of Pharaoh Scorpion the First.
Stones of grape, remainders of squeezed grape were found in the cave of Areni. Around the winery complex there was a graveyard. The specialists say it is possible that wine was used during funerals and sacrificial offerings.
