Karine Nalchajyan: Marriage contract is a culture that must gradually be adopted among us

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS: The marriage contract is a way to regulate property relations between the married couples. The culture of signing marriage contracts has come from England. In Armenia the law on marriage contracts has been fixed from 2004 in parallel to the law about marriage but is not applied in Armenia. The contract is being signed in case of mutual agreement of the couples. The provisions of the contract are being decided by couples. Head of the notarial department of the staff of the RA Justice Ministry Mariam Gaboyan said till now 10 couples in Armenia signed marriage contracts, of which 2 are from abroad.

Speaking to Armenpress psychologist Karine Nalchajyan said such small number of those signing marriage contracts is agreed with lack of awareness. “The signing of contract is perceived as lack of trust. The couples forming family do not want signing marriage contracts though in future they may face certain issues,” the psychologist said, adding that it is a culture which must gradually be adopted among us but for it right information work must be carried out.

“While importing any new phenomena it is very important to take into consideration cultural peculiarities. What is acceptable for one culture may have no life in another culture,” Karine Nalchajyan said, adding that she personally is for signing the contracts as she meets such cases when previously beloved ones are divorcing becoming enemies.
