YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 2, ARMENPRESS: The tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan has increased in the recent period and it is mainly connected with a number of violations of the ceasefire regime in the contact line. In this case any negotiation element and arrangement is more important than silence and its deepening, according to Karen Bekaryan, political scientist, chairman of ‘European Integration’ NGO. At today’s meeting with journalists he spoke on the recent three-sided meeting of Astrakhan of Russian, Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents.

He said the meeting gave positive results for Armenia. ‘And Azerbaijan is in an incomprehensible situation: every day Azerbaijan exclaims about war and that it does not see any progress in the regulation of the NK issue, however it joined that humanistic statement. It means Azerbaijan undertakes that step under pressure of the international community,’ the political scientist said. He added that the only negative element of the negotiation is that the statement was made without the Nagorno Karabakh.

‘However we should be tolerant about this fact, as the issue is in the humanitarian field: it refers neither the process of talks, nor political regulation,’ Karen Bekaryan said. He added that Armenia does not have any issue, connected with the interests of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, as it has not undertaken any step, which would help increase the recent tension. The political scientist emphasized that the response of the US and French sides followed the meeting; ‘it proves that Russia does not tend to monopolize the regulation of the conflict’. ‘It showed that there is a consensus between the co-chairs. The meeting is positive from this point as well,’ Karen Bekaryan noted.
