Gregory Trofimchuk It is impossible to establish any Caucasian union without Armenia

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 19, ARMENPRESS: It is impossible to establish any Caucasian union without Armenia, Gregory Trofimchuk, first deputy chairman of the Russian Center for Strategic Development Modeling, said at Yerevan-Moscow-Yerevan space-bridge, referring to the latest discussions over the opportunity of establishment of Azerbaijan-Georgia confederation.

According to him, this them is mainly activated by the Georgian party, and the passiveness of Azerbaijan is notable in this issue. “This are attempts by Georgia to find its place in the South Caucasus,” he noted, adding that it will be interesting to see how Turkey will manifest itself in this format, having its own vision of the Caucasian platform.

“Azerbaijan-Georgia confederation cannot have any prospective,” Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan said, adding that there is no confederation in the world at the moment, and such kind unifications cannot have long life. “If even Azerbaijan-Georgia confederation is created, it will be Georgia which will take the role of ‘small brother’,” the political analyst said, adding that the main issues will be solved in Baku and not in Tbilisi.

Georgian psychologist, political analyst Ramaz Sakvarelidze is of the opinion that no matter how much the issue of confederation is discussed, there is no concrete program or resolution on establishment of confederation.

Head of the Eurasia institute, political analyst Gulbaat Rtsikhladze said “confederation” term can be used only conditionally, as it is used to describe the relations of Georgia and Azerbaijan, and not to show their future.

“This initiative comes from Georgia, as it tries to use the economic infrastructure of Azerbaijan for development of the own economy,” representative of the Georgian community of Moscow, Levan Pesyanidze said, adding that the current conflicts of the South Caucasus will, nevertheless, hinder the regional intergration processes, sow they must start from solving of political issues.

“Attempts of creating Caucasian unions have been registered previously, but non of them has succeeded,” political analyst Alexander Margarov noted, adding that the idea of confederation, which has been put forth by Saakashvili, has only information and PR goal.
