YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS: The visit of the president of the world’s biggest nuclear state can not be an ordinary one, political analyst Levon Shirinyan said at today’s pres conference, adding that after the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia played a passive role both in the whole world and in the post-soviet territory.
The compulsion of peace to Georgia in 2008, the extension of the term of the Black Sea military base in Sevastopol, as well as of the presence of the Russian military base in Gyumri, according to the analyst, show that the Russian factor is getting activated, and the USA comprehends the activation causes and consequences of Russia in a correct way and displays relevant attitude toward it.
“Russia returns to the South Caucasus through Armenia,” Mr. Shirinyan noted, adding that in the created situation Armenia must rightly asses its interests and combine them with those of its allies.
“I am sure that Russia will fulfill its commitments toward Armenia,” the speaker said, referring to the changes in the contract on the Russian military base in Armenia, according to which the Russian servicemen together with Armenian forces must defend the borders of Armenia.
