Karine Nalchajyan: Very often men are the sources of abortions than women

YEREVAN, AUGUST 17, ARMENPRESS; “Armenpress” news agency spoke with psychologist Karine Nalchajyan about psychological reasons and consequences of artificial interruption of pregnancy – abortion.

- Mrs Nalchajyan which are the main psychological reasons that make a woman interrupt pregnancy?

Maternity is so natural for a woman that only coincidence of very serious and bad circumstances can make her kill the child, let us not be afraid of this word. Unfortunately, different circumstances make a woman commit that step. The greatest happiness for a woman is to feel the joy of being a mother. With this she implements her greatest mission – creation of life. Generally, a woman is more a creating, preserving creature. She tends to keep everything in a stable way, thus taking life – life that is being formed inside of her – is against nature of a woman. The researches and conversations with the women who committed that step show that the first what a woman feels after abortion is the feeling of liberation from something that she did not need, that bothered her. The woman seems to feel revealed but afterwards she starts thinking of the committed step. She thinks about what happened to her and feels guilty of taking a life. It is a very responsible step, the woman is psychologically responsible in front of herself. Of course, in many cases she commits that step being in a deadlock, which in many cases is not a deadlock but a way to avoid responsibility, a fear over the difficulties of life.

- It is many times being spoken about the role of mother in the life of a child but father too has an essential role. What is the role of father in preventing, or vise versa, in promoting abortion?

- Of course, it is mother who bears the child but we must not forger that child is the creation of two people and the role of father is more than important. The fact that a woman sometimes faces the dilemma of giving birth to the child or not in many cases depends on the man. If the man wants and waits the child and if he is happy he stands by the woman and says that the child must be born and in spite of many difficulties the woman feels happy and is more ready to become a mother. Very often men are the sources of abortions than women. The influence and approaches of men are of prior significance.

- Do we know what the infant feels in the intrauterine life when parents are going to get rid of it?

- It is a very important issue. It happens that a decision is being made to remove the infant and doctor says that it is quite mature and the abortion may be dangerous for the health of the woman and the child is born. Here different ways out are possible. In one case man and woman come to a conclusion that child must be born and it is the smallest of the evil thus the psychological risk both for parents and child comes to minimum.

There is information that infant which is going to be removed has some feelings. It has been found out that at the moment when the baby’s being or not being issue is being discussed it reacts. The researches show that in intrauterine life and in our common life the time is different. Imagine one of your relatives stands in front of you and says that he/she wants to kill you. If your talks about abortion last for an hour in the common life, inside the uterus it lasts for 7 hours. In this case we psychologically traumatize the child which as a result of some circumstances may be born.

- And when the issue of giving birth to a child or not is being discussed but finally the parents want to have it, may it have any impact on the further fate of the child?

- I had such cases in my practice. There was a wonderful married couple which has its first child and were doing everything to be good mother and father when suddenly not planned pregnancy occurred and the couple was in alarm. They did not know what to do but our conversations with them resulted in giving birth to the child. One of the important circumstances is that the parents must wish the child as those children the being of which was put under doubt during the pregnancy are specific. They are clenching to life, have strong feeling of self-defense.
