Yerevan declared World Book Capital of 2012

YEREVAN, JULY 6, ARMENPRESS: Yerevan has been declared World Book Capital of 2012. The decision was made at the session of three specialized international book associations and UNESCO pre-electoral task group conducted at the UNESCO headquarter.

An official from the Armenian Culture Ministry told Armenpress that Yerevan has become the 12th town declared Capital of World Book. During the previous years, this title was granted to Madrid, Alexandria, New Delhi, Andverpen, Montreal, Turin, Bogota, Amsterdam, Beirut, Ljubljana and Buenos Ayres.

Yerevan has been selected for valuable and various programs “drafted thoroughly, are realistic and reflect the whole social staff of the town.”

“I congratulate town Yerevan for the presentation of wide thematic, very interesting programs,” director general of UNESCO Irina Bokov stated.

Every year UNESCO and three international specialized book organizations – International Federation of Booksellers, International Association of Publishers and International Federation of Library Association and Organizations select a World Book Capital with a year term. It launches on the International Day of Copyright and Book and ends on the same day next year.
