ROME, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS: Member senator from the Italian main opposition Democratic party Albertina Soliani stated that the Italian Senate must recognize the Armenian Genocide, Armenpress reports citing Turkish ANKA agency.
“As an Armenian-Italian parliamentary friendship group we call on together with the Republic of Armenia and Armenian community of Italy remember this tragedy. We believe that the recognition of this tragedy will create grounds from all the sides for the new and stable cooperation between Armenia and Turkey,” she said at her speech in the Senate.
Member senator from the “Free People” party headed by the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Paolo Amato opposed that the EU even has not forwarded the recognition of the Armenian Genocide as a precondition for Turkey’s integration into Europe.
Italy’s House of Representatives adopted October 17, 2000 a resolution condemning the Armenian Genocide.
