R. Safrastyan says Armenian President’s Washington statements show that Armenia will not go to any concession in the issue of Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS: Washington statements of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan show that Armenia will go to concession neither in the issue of the genocide, nor in Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Director of the Institute of Eastern Studies of the National Academy of Sciences, specialist of Turkish studies Ruben Safrastyan said today at a meeting with journalists. According to him, all the efforts of the Turkish party of exerting pressure on Armenia in this direction have been unfruitful up to now, and will go on being so. According to R. Safrastyan, the next important result of the statements of the Armenian president is that Armenia and Diaspora will go on working jointly on issues exciting the Armenians.

R. Safrastyan noted that as a result of the meeting of the Armenian president and Turkish prime minister, the parties have maintained their position. “On one hand we have a statement from the parties, according to which the process must be continued, and on the other hand Turkey continues its rough statements. Even in the press there are publications, according to which Turkey is not ready to ratify the protocols,” R. Safrsatyan underscored.

According to him, the regulation process of Armenian-Turkish relations has reached a deadlock, but it is a complicated diplomatic process and we must move forward step by step. I am sure that sooner or later the process will get out of the deadlock. I understand quite well that the Turkish diplomacy will not do anything at the same time,” R. Safrastyan said. He noted that Turkey faces other issues, too, besides the Armenian one.

According to the specialist of Turkish studies, the international community will display an adequate attitude toward the position of Armenia, for Armenia, being a small country, showed that it is a serious state, has a serious diplomacy and does not break its signatures in contrast to Turkey. This brings to increase of reputation of Armenia in the diplomatic platform. “As for Turkey, it does not have in the current world the reputation it might have, if we take into consideration its potential,” he stressed.

Referring to the issue on recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the USA, R. Safrastyan expressed hope that it will take place during the current administration. “I am inclined to believe that US President Barack Obama will keep the promise given to Armenians. “The use of the definition of “genocide” by the US president will result in significant consequences, which will be favorable for us, as dozen of countries will start the recognition of the Armenian Genocide at the same time,” the speaker said.
