YEREVAN, MARCH 11, ARMENPRESS: “The adoption of the H. Res. 252 on the Armenian Genocide by the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Relations must be considered neither a victory nor a defeat, if we take into consideration that the recognition of the Genocide is important first of all by Turkey and not by the international community,” Khosrov Harutyunyan, head of the Armenian Christian-Democratic Party, told Armenpress.

He says the USA tends to take advantage of the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide for solving its own political issues. He said he does not think the US recognition of the Armenian Genocide will have any influence on Turkey and will make it recognize the crime. “Just the opposite, no pressure must be exerted on Turkey in this issue. Genocide recognized under pressure may be more dangerous for Armenia. The same opinion was expressed by Hrant Dink as well,” Kh. Harutyunyan said.

According to him, the issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition must be gradually ‘injected into’ the Turkish society. However, he mentioned there is a notable progress in this issue, as the Turkish society speaks about the issue quite frequently. “We must not hurry, it is necessary to go forward slowly. In this respect the H. Res. 252 will reflect on the opinion of the Turkish people but will not have a resolute effect,” Harutyunyan said.

He noted that the resolution will not have a positive influence on the process of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations and will cause additional tension. He said the normalization process does not depend on Armenia and explained that Turkey tends to take advantage of the process. ‘However, it is not clear whether the international community is ready to grant Turkey what it wants or not. Sure, it will not be to the benefit of the international community to do so,’ he stated.

According to Khosrov Harutyunyan, normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations is good for Armenia in terms of security. “Everything which will promote the normalization of relations must be used, and vice versa, anything, which will hinder the progress in the normalization process must be overcome and bypass,” head of the Armenian Christian-Democratic Party concluded.
