YEREVAN, MARCH 4, ARMENPRESS: The possibility of accepting H. Res. 252 on recognizing and condemning the Armenian genocide in the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives is large.
Taking into consideration that in the last ten years similar resolutions on recognition of the Armenian Genocide have been submitted to the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives three times and have been approved, as well as taking into consideration that the White House and Department of State do not come forward against accepting the resolution with the same activeness and Jewish lobbyist organizations do not display the same activeness, the possibility that the committee will make a positive conclusion is large,” Responsible of the ARF Armenian Cause and Political Issues Kiro Manoyan told Armenpress.
In response to the question of shifting the resolution to the agenda of the plenary sessions of the House of Representatives after its accepting in the committee, K. Manoyan noted that it is the most complicated; during the last 10 years they never succeeded to involve the issue in the agenda of a plenary session.
“It has been prevented, for everybody realizes quite well that the resolution will be certainly accepted after its involvement in the agenda of the sessions of the House of Representatives. The work on involving it in the agenda of plenary sessions will not stop, but the fate of the resolution depends on both the development of American-Turkish relations, ratification of Armenian-Turkish protocols, the work of the Armenian-American community, and on the activities of Turkey,” he noted.
The discussion expected today in the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives has raised a wave of discussions over the issue of the Armenian genocide. According to the Turkish mass media, 18 democrats and 7 republicans out of the 46 parliament members of the committee stand up for the resolution.
At the invitation of co-chairmen of the Armenian Caucus of the US Congress Frank Pallone and Marc Kirk, NA members Artak Zakaryan and Koryun Nahapetyan, representatives of the Armenian Republican Party, and head of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s NA faction Vahan Hovhannisyan have left for Washington. They will present to the commission the viewpoint of the Armenian parliament members.
