Vladimir Vardanyan elected president of Armenia’s Constitutional Court

Vladimir Vardanyan has been elected president of Armenia’s Constitutional Court.

Edgar Shatiryan, Vice-President of the Constitutional Court and a candidate for the presidency, announced the result in a conversation with journalists following the vote.

“The election is over. The Court has elected its president. I was not elected,” Shatiryan said.

Vardanyan and Shatiryan had been nominated for the position. The election took place on November 6 at a working session of the Court.

The previous election for the post of Constitutional Court president was held on October 14, with the same two candidates nominated. Shatiryan’s candidacy was put forward at a working session, while Vardanyan nominated himself.

Neither candidate received the required number of votes in the first or second round of the secret ballot. The Constitutional Court declared the election unsuccessful and announced that a new vote would be held.

The need to elect a new president arose after the six-year term of Arman Dilanyan as president of the Constitutional Court expired on October 12. Dilanyan continues to serve as a judge of the Constitutional Court. Under the Constitution, the Constitutional Court elects its president from among its members for a six-year term, with no possibility of re-election.
