COP17 has enabled Armenia to establish new ties with international partners, says Robert Abisoghomonyan

COP17 has enabled Armenia to establish ties with various parties, including international organisations and donors, generating interest in implementing projects across several sectors.

Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Robert Abisoghomonyan said this at a briefing on 14 October.

He said another important outcome was the development of Armenia’s capabilities, which would help resolve problems in the sector in the future. Drawing on the expertise of local specialists and experts would make it possible to address existing challenges.

Abisoghomonyan said more than 50 high-level participants were expected at the leaders’ summit, while up to 150 senior participants were expected at the high-level ministerial segment scheduled for 27–28 October.

Asked which country would assume the COP presidency in two years, the deputy minister said this was decided on a rotational basis.

Under that principle, the next presidency should go to the Latin American and Caribbean regional group. The decision must be reached by consensus.

“It is not always possible to reach a decision by consensus, as was the case with Armenia. Armenia’s presidency was confirmed by a vote,” he added.
