Michael O’Neill to become one of key figures in Armenian women’s basketball

The Basketball Federation of Armenia has announced the appointment of Michael O’Neill as General Manager of Armenian Women’s Basketball.

The Federation’s press service reported that the decision was made at a meeting of the BFA Executive Committee. Committee members were presented with programmes and initiatives proposed by O’Neill for the development of women’s basketball in Armenia. Following the discussion, the Executive Committee unanimously approved his appointment.

O’Neill has experience coaching girls’ basketball in the United States, as well as extensive professional experience in management, entrepreneurship and organisational development.

In his new role, O’Neill will work closely with the Basketball Federation of Armenia to develop and implement a long-term strategy for women’s basketball covering all levels, from grassroots and youth basketball to junior and senior national teams.

His responsibilities will include supporting efforts to identify and recruit coaches and female basketball players in Armenia and the Armenian diaspora, strengthening the structure of the national teams, developing international cooperation and contributing to the sustainable development of women’s basketball in Armenia.

O’Neill will become the programme’s first General Manager. His initial term will be two years, beginning on October 1, 2026. He will lead the programme through the 2028 FIBA European Championships.
