European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that Ukraine has requested several billion euros to cover air defence costs, including PAC-3 Patriot systems. She made the remarks following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels on September 2.
“Today I can confirm that we have received a new request for payment. It amounts to several billion euros and will cover Ukraine’s air defence costs, including advanced PAC-3 Patriot air defence missile systems,” von der Leyen said in a video of her remarks released by Guardian News.
“Member states are currently discussing Ukraine’s request, but I can say that it is moving in the right direction,” von der Leyen added.
She also said that joint work with Ukraine on the FREYA project is under way in Europe.
“This is a European project to create its own missile defence system,” the European Commission President explained.
Von der Leyen clarified that “all of this is in addition to the €90 billion support loan already in place for Ukraine.”
