Explosive and incendiary devices have been discovered near the German town of Jänschwalde, home to one of the country’s largest lignite-fired power plants. Work is currently under way to make the devices safe, Deutsche Welle reported.
According to police, the attack was most likely intended to cause a large-scale power outage. Brandenburg state premier Dietmar Woidke described the incident as an attempted terrorist attack.
“The alarmingly high frequency of such incidents shows that we must resolutely protect our infrastructure,” the politician said.
He added that emergency services, together with staff at the substation and power plant, had prevented the worst-case scenario through their swift response.
The Jänschwalde thermal power plant has a capacity of 2,000 megawatts, with one 500-megawatt unit held in reserve. The plant supplies electricity to millions of households and also contributes to the operation of the district heating system in the city of Cottbus.
