The European Union (EU) is setting up a new high-level group comprising political and military leaders from member states, the United Kingdom and Ukraine, aimed at identifying ways to strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities amid growing threats from Russia, Euronews reported.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced the launch of the initiative during an informal meeting of defence ministers in Ireland, saying it would help develop a new approach to European defence.
“The aim is to bring together the most prominent experts in security and defence who can propose unconventional solutions to fill these gaps as quickly as possible and act more effectively, particularly now that the security situation in Europe has become considerably more tangible,” Kallas said.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of unprecedented security challenges facing Europe. The US administration has reduced its military presence on the continent, while the escalation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine is heightening concerns over the possibility of the conflict spreading to EU territory.
