The European Union plans to increase funding for Morocco to strengthen the protection of shared borders and tackle irregular migration, RIA Novosti reported.
“We are already working with the Moroccan authorities towards a more structured and forward-looking partnership with the EU. We can strengthen border management and the early warning system, as well as increase technical and financial support for Morocco,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Between 2021 and 2024, the EU allocated €222 million to Morocco for migration management, and a further €190 million is expected to be provided by the end of 2027.
The new funding is expected to be included in the strategic and comprehensive partnership agreement currently being developed between the EU and Morocco, which Brussels aims to conclude by the end of 2026.
