One charged over alleged suicide of Armenian serviceman

One person has been charged with negligently causing Armenian Armed Forces serviceman Grigor Zakaryan to commit suicide, Armenia’s Investigative Committee said.

Zakaryan’s body was found with a gunshot wound on August 13.

The suspect has been placed in pre-trial detention, the committee said.

According to the law enforcement agency, criminal proceedings were initiated against the individual under Article 522, Part 2, Clauses 2 and 3 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, which covers negligently causing a serviceman to commit suicide.

The Defense Ministry reported on August 13 that Zakaryan’s body had been found with a gunshot wound at his military post and said an investigation was underway to establish the circumstances of his death.

His death is the latest reported non-combat death in the Armenian army.
