US President Donald Trump has said that, following a final victory over Iran, he intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz part of United States territory, Deutsche Welle reports.
Speaking at a meeting at the New York State Police Academy, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz was currently under the control of the US Armed Forces, which had blockaded the ports of the Islamic Republic.
Iranian authorities have also said they have blocked the strait, where shipping has been disrupted since February, when the United States and Israel launched their war against Tehran.
Trump offered no explanation for his statement about declaring the Strait of Hormuz US territory, although he had previously insisted that the war with Iran would be short-lived. Trump has previously stressed Washington’s desire to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal and has also referred to Venezuela as the 51st US state.
Commenting on Trump’s statement, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stressed that the Islamic Republic would not yield to US threats and shows of force.
