A drone crashed in a forested area in Romania’s Luncavița region, sparking a fire, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing Romania’s Ministry of National Defence and local media.
According to the report, Romania’s Defence Ministry received information at around 12:00 on August 14 about a drone crash in Tulcea. The military said the aerial target had not been detected by the ministry’s radar systems because it had been flying at a very low altitude. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties or material damage.
A team from the Ministry of National Defence is surveying the area by helicopter. Firefighters have also been dispatched to the scene.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said at a press conference that Romania’s armed forces were doing everything possible to counter drones.
“We are beginning to see that this is becoming a permanent phenomenon, not only in Romania, and rapidly equipping our army with combat drones is becoming a necessity,” he added.
According to RBC-Ukraine, earlier on August 14, an alert was issued at a beach in the Romanian village of Costinești after a fragment of a drone was discovered. Police immediately cordoned off the area.
In addition, on August 11, the Romanian military destroyed two Gerbera drones near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. In late July, Romania also shot down three drones in just three days. Bucharest spent €1.5 million on these efforts.
