At least 13 killed after days of heavy rain in the Philippines

Flooding, landslides and other incidents caused by nine consecutive days of heavy rain in the northern Philippines have killed at least 13 people, Euronews reports.

Rainfall intensified by tropical storms has led to the closure of schools and government offices on the island of Luzon and caused street flooding in the capital, Manila.

Four people were killed in the resort city of Baguio when a rain-soaked slope collapsed onto several houses. Rescuers cleared debris as they searched for six more people who were still considered missing a day after the incident.

Government meteorologist Dan Villamil said the resort city north of the capital had already recorded 47% more rainfall than its usual monthly average. From August 1 to 9, Baguio recorded the highest rainfall, with a total of 1,413.2 millimetres.

In some parts of the Manila metropolitan area, rainfall has already reached about 90% of the average amount normally recorded during the entire month of August.
