EU experts and Armenian regulator discuss electricity market reform and energy storage framework

Discussions on Armenia's electricity market reform and the regulation of electricity storage began at the country's Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) on July 21 with the participation of European Union experts, the commission said in a statement.

The event is being held under the EU4Energy programme as part of the Promoting Clean Energy Transition and Connectivity in the Eastern Partnership Countries initiative.

Opening the discussions, Mesrop Mesropyan, Chairman of Armenia's Public Services Regulatory Commission, highlighted the importance of cooperation with the European Union and other international partners in advancing the country's ongoing electricity market reforms.

According to Mesropyan, such cooperation helps develop modern regulatory approaches, introduce international best practices and support the sustainable development of the energy sector.

Armin Böhm, Head of the Armenia Office of the EU4Energy programme, also addressed the participants, underscoring the importance of energy cooperation between Armenia and the European Union and outlining the programme's ongoing activities.

The discussions will present the results of work carried out under the EU4Energy programme, including an assessment of Armenia's Law on Energy, the mapping and prioritisation of secondary legislation stemming from the law, the possible alignment of Armenia's energy legislation with the Energy Community acquis, and the development of a regulatory framework for electricity storage.

The event aims to deepen cooperation between Armenia and the European Union in the energy sector while supporting the development and implementation of efficient, modern regulatory frameworks aligned with European best practices.

During a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan on July 2, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union wanted to help Armenia diversify its energy supplies and announced that a team of EU experts would travel to Armenia to support those efforts.
