Teenager dies after fountain collapses during Spain's World Cup victory celebrations

A 13-year-old boy died after a fountain partially collapsed during celebrations of Spain's FIFA World Cup victory in the western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo, Reuters reported, citing Spanish emergency services.

Two other people were injured in the incident.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight in Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval town of about 12,000 people in Salamanca province, as celebrations of Spain's historic World Cup triumph were taking place across the country.

Ciudad Rodrigo's town hall expressed its condolences to the victim's family.

"The entire city mourns this loss and shares the grief of the minor's family and friends... What should have been a celebration of Spain's World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy," the statement said.

On July 19, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup final to lift the trophy for the second time in the country's history.
