U.S. President Donald Trump has once again emphasized his role in ending the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. He said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about it, and the latter was surprised by the swift resolution.
Speaking at a televised meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said, “They [Armenia and Azerbaijan] were fighting for 35 years. Putin actually said to me: "I can't believe you settled that war because I tried for 10 years." And literally, I settled it in one day.”
Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a U.S.-brokered joint peace declaration on August 8 in Washington and initialed a peace treaty.
