Pope Leo urges 24-hour Christmas ceasefire across globe

Pope Leo XIV has called for a day of peace across the world for Christmas, while expressing deep sorrow over deadly conflicts raging across multiple nations.

“I once again make this appeal to all people of goodwill: that, at least on the feast of the birth of the Savior, one day of peace may be respected,” Leo said.

Leo made his remarks while speaking to the press at Castel Gandolfo on Dec. 23, the Vatican News reported.

Leo expressed “great sadness” over the deadly Russia-Ukraine war, wherein Russia “apparently refused the request for a Christmas truce.”

“Perhaps they will listen to us, and there will be 24 hours -- one full day of peace throughout the world,” Leo said.
