Investigative Committee provides details regarding arrest of Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan

The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia has confirmed to Armenpress the arrest of Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, the Chancellor of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. His lawyer, Arsen Babayan, had earlier announced the arrest.

According to the Investigative Committee, a public criminal prosecution has been initiated during the preliminary investigation. The Archbishop has been charged with involvement in the illegal sale of drugs by a group of persons acting with prior consent in a public place.

On October 25, a Telegram channel named “Armenian WikiLeaks” published an intimate video allegedly depicting Archbishop Khachatryan. The “Union of Informed Citizens” NGO reported the incident to the Prosecutor General’s Office, citing a serious violation of privacy. The Prosecutor’s Office forwarded the report to the Investigative Committee, which later confirmed the authenticity of the footage through forensic examination.
