Thirty-three people have been arrested for alleged rioting and obstruction of justice during the October 20 demonstrations in Gyumri, which were sparked by the arrest of Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, the Investigative Committee said in a press release.
Shortly after law enforcement agents raided Gyumri City Hall to take Mayor Ghukasyan into custody, a large crowd of his supporters gathered inside and outside the building to prevent the arrest. A scuffle broke out between the demonstrators and police, and several individuals were detained.
Ghukasyan and seven other City Hall staff members are facing corruption charges.
The mayor has been jailed without bail pending trial.
