Minister Papoyan holds meeting with newly elected UN Tourism Secretary-General

Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan on Friday received the newly-elected Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization Shaikha Al Nowais.

The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to Armenia Nariman Al-Mulla and Chairwoman of the Tourism Committee of the Armenian Ministry of Tourism Lusine Gevorgyan, the Ministry of Economy has said in a readout.

Congratulating Shaikha Al Nowais on assuming the post of UNWTO Secretary-General, Gevorg Papoyan wished her fruitful work. He expressed hope that cooperation in the tourism sector would further expand and strengthen during her tenure.

During the meeting, the parties discussed issues pertaining to the prospects for the development of the tourism sector in Armenia and the possibilities for implementing joint initiatives were discussed.

Papoyan emphasized that tourism is one of the key sectors of Armenia's economic development, the potential of which remains untapped.

The minister highlighted medical tourism as one of the most promising areas of the sector. In this context, he suggested considering the possibility of jointly organizing an International Medical Tourism Conference with UNWTO.

The discussion also touched upon the development of tourism clusters in Armenia, the steady growth of tourist flows to the country, the promotion of wine tourism, digitalization of the sector and the diversification of tourism products.
