Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, said that the inviolability of international borders and uninterrupted connection between Armenia and Iran is of “vital importance.”
Pashinyan said he discussed with Pezeshkian during their August 19 meeting in Yerevan regional peace and unblocking of economic infrastructures in the region.
He said Armenia’s vision is presented in the Crossroads of Peace project, which has been endorsed by Iran.
“Armenia and the Armenian people highly appreciate Iran’s unambiguous stance regarding Armenia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and inviolability of borders. The inviolability of the international borders and uninterrupted connection between our states is of vital important for Armenia and Iran,” Pashinyan said.
He said he presented details to Pezeshkian about the Washington accords signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the initialed peace agreement.
He said the process is aimed at opening prospects for the economic development of the entire region.
“I am happy and thankful for President Pezeshkian’s objective assessments about these accords. One of the key agreements with Azerbaijan is about the reopening of connection routes in the region, with full mutual respect of the countries’ sovereignty, jurisdiction and territorial integrity. Practically this would open new doors for railway cooperation between Armenia and Iran, including through the Nakhchivan-Julfa railway, which would mean Iranian railway access toward Armenia and eventually the Black Sea,” Pashinyan said.
He said Armenia is confident that the regional infrastructure unblocking must serve to boost dialogue between various colleagues.
“I’d like to once again clearly emphasize that the connection routes passing through Armenia will be exclusively under Armenian jurisdiction, Armenia will ensure the security, and not any other country,” Pashinyan said.
