Yerevan mayor orders bidding for waste processing plant to replace Soviet-era landfill

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan instructed City Hall officials to organize a bidding for the construction of a waste processing plant by yearend to replace the Nubarashen landfill, which was ablaze on August 8 and sparked renewed environmental concerns.

The fire has since been put out.

Speaking at a televised City Hall meeting, the Mayor recalled that city officials had already been tasked with developing a tender for the construction of a new plant even before the fire.

“I am concerned that I’m not hearing any news about that tender here,” the mayor said.

“If I am not mistaken, the environmental protection department and the relevant project implementation division had been tasked with this. Either the bidding takes place by yearend, or I make the appropriate personnel decisions, because this is the most important and difficult issue facing Yerevan, and we can’t delay it.”
